Windsor Symphony Orchestra: Whimsical Concerto of Fanciful Birds

Canadian composer Vincent Ho blends classical music with bird-inspired sounds. This performance will feature saxophonist Timothy McAllister following his World Premiere of this piece last year. The University of Michigan School of Music students along with the WSO, paint a sonic picture of birds in flight.

World Premiere: Malek Jandali’s Symphony No. 5 

This concert also features the World Premiere of Syrian American composer Malek Jandali’s Symphony No. 5 which integrates ancient Arabic melodies into Western classical orchestra, preserving and presenting the rich heritage of his homeland, Syria.

What’s something interesting about this concert? 

• Vincent Ho blends both Western classical and Eastern influences in his compositions. His Whimsical Concerto of Fanciful Birds creatively uses the orchestra to mimic the playful and diverse sounds of birds, with movements designed to evoke different bird species.
• Aside from being an active performer Timothy McAllister is also an educator, serving as a Professor of Saxophone at the University of Michigan.
• Malek Jandali has composed an extensive symphonic repertoire that includes eight symphonies, seven concertos, a full-length opera, a musical, and numerous orchestral and chamber works. His large-scale compositions often explore profound philosophical themes and have been commissioned, premiered and recorded by leading symphony orchestras around the world.
